Another Letter to the Editor After ADA Celebration

The following letter to the editor appeared in The News Journal on August 5, 2015 is a reaction to events that occurred at the ADA Celebration in Dover last month.

“Many Approaches Needed to Help People

The recent celebration in Dover of the 25th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was a much anticipated event. This was a chance to commemorate all of the civil rights progress within the disability community in the last 25 years through tireless efforts by individuals, advocates, agencies, and legislators.

The Arc of Delaware, which advocates for persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities, is proud to have been an integral part of these efforts from the start, and we extend our gratitude to everyone who has contributed along the way.

How ironic and unfortunate and unfortunate that this special event to celebrate success through collaboration was marred by the very public repression of one advocacy group, monitored and enforced by the police.

The Arc of Delaware believes that, through out approaches may differ, all of the advocates in this state share the common goal of empowering self-determination for people with disabilities. While we may not always agree on the details, The Arc welcomes diverse opinions that help broaden our perspective and inform our decisions.

Channeling the ADA’s theme of inclusion, all advocates should be treated fairly and respectfully. To effect public policies with real choices for individuals with disabilities, all opinions must be heard.
